Pokémon Go: What's to Come

Whether you're one of the millions of Pokémon Go users or wishing Pokémon died forever in 1998, this game has changed the way we use technology.

The app that quickly became the most played game in the U.S. has surpassed Tinder installations, topped Twitter daily users and has people spending more time in the app than on Facebook. Lookout Silicon Valley, Pikachu and friends are taking over.

So, what's the big deal? Oh, just the fact that this is the first widespread use of augmented reality (AR). No, it's not fully immersive and no, our phones aren't specifically for AR use, but that makes this so much more exciting. If developers can achieve this degree of success on devices that aren't designed for this type of tech, what can they accomplish with AR-specific platforms?

From a marketing perspective, this is pure gold. For brands today trying to break through the noise, it doesn't get much better than having consumers completely immersed and obsessed with your product. And Niantic has done just that and more. Pokémon Go encourages people to get outside and play. In turn, creating hype on nearly every social media platform, news outlet, review website and neighborhood across the country.

Looks like AR has made quite the splash. It'll be interesting to see what other brands do next and which ones will try to capitalize on the AR momentum. Will they be just as successful? Stay tuned and hang on, for the way we communicate, shop, share and do just about everything in between is changing.
