Video Fail

As you can see, there is not a video in this blog post. Simply put, I learned a lot in the process of actually trying to film and edit an interview with a fellow colleague. Here are a few tips from a first-timer for interviewers and interviewees.My video fail is your gain. You're welcome.

Look the part. Be mindful of colors and patterns when it comes to clothing. Sticking to jewel tones, blues and greens, are best. Remove glasses as they can cause glare. Lighting can help or hurt. Be sure your subject is well lit and doesn't come across too washed out.

Craft direct questions to get direct answers. Think of the audience. Responses should be short and sweet, to the point. Have the interviewee repeat each question before answering as this will help with the editing process. Remember, you are looking for sound bites.

Be mindful of background noise. If you hear a noise while you're filming, it's likely going to interrupt the audio. Go back and film that question and answer again.

Capture more than you need. For the sake of your video editing sanity, film more footage than you think you need. It's always best to have additional footage to splice and dice as you see fit.
